Oh! Oh! I got one to add: Mary Sue stories, in any fandom, very often involve the main female character getting pregnant after what was supposed to be one night of passion. (Actually, this is a cliche that pops up pretty much everywhere - and I hate it in movies, TV shows, pop songs, novels, short stories...)

Good one, Rhoda. Has anyone mentioned best friends or sisters all dating/marrying a Hanson? (I'm not even gonna touch that one. )

Good one, Rhoda. Has anyone mentioned best friends or sisters all dating/marrying a Hanson? (I'm not even gonna touch that one. ) How ironic that their actual lives are the stuff of a Mary Sue fiction? Taylor gets the hot fan he met backstage pregnant and marries her. Then Zac marries her best friend.... If I read that fanfic, I'd roll my eyes at how stupid and "coincidental" all of it was. And I guess that I'm an inveterate Mary Sue writer...

Zac married Kate? Wow, am I out of the loop.
I personally hate fics where they forget the birth control. Sorry, but when reading sex scenes, that's very often on my mind.

See, now I was gonna keep my mouth shut, but there you go. I feel the same way as you. I won't read those stories. Most of them irritate me with their corny plots. I've just realized something. Most of the stories I like have Mary Sue characters. I just love a good hero/heroine, and I think most heros/heroines are a little too good to be true.

I know, I've always said that if the story of the Hansons and their significant others was written down in fic form, it would be, like, the worst fanfic ever, and we would ALL be making fun of it. Shew. But truth is stranger than fiction, is it not? hehe. And while we're on the MS topic, I think you should all go read Caro's short poem/story, "The Ballad of Mary Sue". It was written for the LOTR fandom, but she manages to hilariously capture nearly every conceivable Mary Sue cliche (both in general and LOTR-specific) in one piece. You can check it out here: The Ballad of Mary SueShe's such a great writer -- I love the LOTR fics she's done. All very witty and fun to read. Too bad she doesn't write Hanfic.

Hey, they don't call them 'cliches' for nothing. About the birth control thing: I personally never bother with it in writing, even though I'm a huge advocate for it in real life, just because it interrupts the flow of the narrative. There is NO way to make it romantic. Or sexy. If someone has an example that works the other way, I'd be glad to see it, but I haven't figured that out yet myself.

J, somehow I highly doubt anyone was bothered by your Mary Sues (not that I think they were Mary Sues). You're stories were so much fun! I love every one of them. Thank you so much, Barbara.

Ohhh, my goodness. Then I must be the queen of the Mary Sue. Hey, like Krystal said, a 'Mary Sue' isn't always a bad thing! Thank you, I feel much better now. I was starting to think I wasn't artistic enough, or something. lol I guess the best thing to do is stick with what you know and feel most comfortable writing.

Maybe what we really need to know is--what ISN'T a Mary Sue? I mean, what kind of girl wouldn't be? Would she have to be pug ugly? Yeah, Isaac's gonna fall for her! (or his brothers for that matter) Does she have to be dumb? Mary Sues are always clever little minxes! Does she have to live at home with Mommy and Daddy? Booooooooring! Excellent points, Krystal!

I know what you mean when you say birth control interupts the flow of a narrative. However, I can think of one story that incorporates it without the reader batting an eyelash and thinking, "Wow, break a moment!" Ella wrote a very sweet short that accompanies 'Catapult' which had a moment that was hardly out of place -- in fact, it was very sweet, funny, and of course, sexy! *LOL*

Is it weird to say that my biggest pet peeve is when a Hanson is a Mary Sue? Ugh, I cannot stand it when a Hanson member (especially Taylor) is always the strong one, the infallible one, the one who always knows what to say. He is the knight in shining armor, usually being sort of a jerk in the beginning but then seeing beyond outer beauty in a very bland, predictable way. He never makes horrible mistakes or says nasty things (unless, of course, he's a jerk who will fall in love with the awkward-yet-undeniably-loveable heroine, where then they will get married and live together happily ever after) either. Haha, I think I'll call them "Taylor Sue's"......

But it was perfectly fitting for those two, really. Although I didn't go into as much detail as I could have -- I left out some of the more un-sexy moments. As Krystal put it, 'Haven't they ever heard of KY Jelly?' LMAO! Diosa, I think you just described my story to a T.
